Warp Speed!

I've noticed something in the last two weeks, and it seems very significant to me. I've played a game (Star Trek Online) a lot, and it's been very fun. From March 12 up until yesterday, I was playing just to get up to the level of Vice Admiral. However, it seems like it was only yesterday I was downloading the game, and now I'm already at the level cap. There are two things I must say to this: First, I've never reached the level cap in an MMO within a month before, and second, where did those weeks go?It's odd, really, that all the time just magically disappeared. I feel like my life is going in warp, mainly because I've focused on things not truly related to personal growth. I don't know if that's my mind's way of telling me to contemplate things that truly matter, but even in my Japanese class (which is an hour long, mind you) I seem to have problems concentrating...and then, the class is already over. Where did it go?

I honestly don't have any answer to this, except that time is simply speeding up. I noticed time speeding up ever since I was in the fifth grade (now that was a long time ago). Something just didn't feel right back then...I actually felt like things were going at a slightly faster pace. By the time I was in high school, things slowed down a little, but that's because I forced them to. I actually did very poorly in high school. I skipped over a whole month of class (not in a row of course, but it was still a lot) and I'm surprised my mom didn't get arrested because of it.

But each of the days I skipped, they went slow. The ones I didn't skip were all very fast-paced, and for some reason I can't figure out why that is. It's possible I was focusing on something I felt I had to when I skipped, but when I was at school it was things I didn't really need, so I tuned them out. I don't really know, but it seems right to me.

So, now time has sped up greatly, and I can't even keep up. Where did March go!? I miss it...but more importantly, I miss my Japanese classes. I was learning so much, yet my concentration completely kept failing, all because I just couldn't concentrate. I did so much better first semester.

I do hope time isn't so speedy when I go exploring with some friends...I really need to understand some things, so that way I can truly grasp each concept and use it all in the best way I know how. And if time is so quick, it may completely throw me off. It's sad, really...but no matter. I must keep going and hope for the best in things. I'll keep trying to understand as much as I can, but I need time to slow it down just a pinch...otherwise, I may not fully succeed.

Let me know if any of you have experienced any problems with how quick time has become. It's almost scary sometimes, I know, but as long as you stay focused on things, you should be fine.

  1. I don't think that it is so much that time itself is speeding up, but our perception of it compared to the rest of our lives. When we were mere children, frolicing outside in the sun (or inside playing games in my case) the passage of time seemed vast compared to how we view it now. I suppose when you compare a month to 5 years and then to 20 years, you realize how big of a part of your life that one month was in the past compared to now. Just imagine when you're reaching 60,70, even 80 years old and compare that one month to the multitudes you've already experienced and it will seem like almost nothing.

  2. While I can see why you would say that, I would have to also point out that it's not just me that is experiencing it, yet alone just my age group. Honestly, I've made this same argument before, but not as blunt, or as versed. However, I can say that regardless of what it is, it's still happening and is not something I believe is completely natural. I remember counting the seconds on a clock when I was younger, and now my count is slightly slower. It's always slightly slower, never slightly faster. I'm wondering if I can get others to get that same outcome, but even at that, it still doesn't prove or disprove anything. It's truly hard to say what is the ultimate cause...and only speculation can come from trying to determine what it is. But in spite of this, I still have to reason it is not just me that has noticed this, and as such, it must not be just our perception that has been bent.

  3. I suppose that I'm a bit biased toward the "bent perception" thing because of my belief that our perception of the world around us is our reality. When one's perception changes then one's reality changes to match it. As social beings we all share our perceptions with one another and therefore our realities become in sinc -- of course there are situations where the perceptions between individuals do not agree. In such cases, each person's perception is as true as the other to themselves, and reality is what they decide it is.

In short, our perceptions of time is what makes it reality. If one person percieves it as going faster or slower, then that is only true for that person's reality. Personally, when I count seconds I tend to count faster than the clock ticks, rather than slower; therefore in my reality time is going slower (if only because I'm focusing on it).

  4. I have that belief as well...after all, the world is only as good (or bad) as you make it out to be. Even at that, however, it only goes so far, because not even science can prove if everything we experience is all based on perception or truly just is like that for everyone. Likewise, that is also untestable, since there is still someone's perception being entered into the equation. So, basically, I'm simply throwing the "it could or it could not" statement, since that's all I really can throw out there.

I will say this, however...regardless of whether or not it could be based on perception, I still stand by what I've found, simply because it seems very true to a lot of those I've talked to. In fact, you're the only one so far that has said time seems to go slower to you. Not that it's that big of a deal, it's just interesting. But yeah...thanks for your insight!
